I've done a lot of things since my last post, so this post might be a bit long for you. I traveled to the coastal town of Exmouth with one of my flatmates and it was really lovely there. It reminded me of how much I miss my home beach. When we explored the town a little we found a park filled with several dinosaur statues. This was to commemorate the Jurassic Coast which is close to Exmouth.
Quick nerdy history lesson for those of you who don't know. Mary Anning was a renowned paleontologist from nearby Dorset, who discovered many new fossils to add to the record in the 1800s. However, because she was a woman, she didn't receive credit for many of these findings until later in life. The cliffs on the jurassic coast were extremely dangerous to work under because of the threat of a collapse at any moment. The cliffs took her father's life when she was still young and she worked to preserve his legacy. She was poor for pretty much her entire life, but is considered to be one of the most influential historical women in the scientific community. Please look up more about her, she was a seriously cool person.
Okay, now back to my adventure! We ended up stumbling into this very small, but very beautiful cathedral that had some lovely stained glass windows and after walking around for a bit we decided to get something to eat. We ate at a local fish & chip shop and I have to be honest here, fish & chips are exactly what it sounds like. It was fried fish and french fries. I enjoyed it, but I'll take a burger any day over fish. While we were at Exmouth we visited their town museum. It was only two rooms and it was adorable. The museum mostly talked about Exmouth's role in both World Wars and people from Exmouth who died fighting in them. I really enjoyed Exmouth and wouldn't mind going back to explore it some more one day.
In other news, I'm really enjoying living in Exeter. My flatmates are great. Half of them are from Hong Kong, so we had an international food night where I made sweet tea, my friend from Texas made lemon bars for dessert, and the girls from Hong Kong made several delicious entrees. It was as fantastic as it sounds. I also officially joined the basketball club and the rifle club. I've been pretty busy now that classes have started, but I'll be sure to keep everyone updated as best as I can. I will be traveling to London this weekend to meet my friend Sara who is currently studying in Barcelona and I'm shaking with excitement at the opportunity to see a familiar face!
Until next time, Cheers!
